Filmstaden Sans, an ever changing colorful typeface to experience big emotions.
Filmstaden, the biggest movie theatre chain in Sweden, is a brand with a long history and emotional connection within Swedish culture. By taking inspiration from the Art Deco letterings found in theatres, Filmstaden Sans pays tribute to Filmstaden’s heritage. Conceived as a key element within Filmstaden’s re-branding, the Filmstaden type family has three regular weights and a four-layer colour display weight that puts colour at the core of Filmstaden’s new typographic experience.
The Filmstaden Sans family has been created in the context the rebranding of Filmstaden identity. So-Type worked on the creation of a custom font including 3 functional text weights and a 4 modular display weights. The display weights are meant to be combined to play with different colour layers.

A brand new cinema experience.
An experience designed to evoke ‘big emotions’ demands a lot from the identity of those delivering that experience. A lot of thought, craft and ingenuity is required. Independent of communication channels, components such an identity has to be scalable and flexible.
The new Filmstaden brand identity has a flexible approach to its different components, meaning that these components are sufficiently strong to act independently as vessels of the brand identity, independent of each other.
